Saint of the day, May 28

Pope John Paul II, on June 13, 1999 beatified Archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski and 107 other Poles who were martyred by the Nazi regime in World War II. The archbishop of Plock, Poland, Bishop Nowowiejski sought to better Catholic education in his diocese, creating a minor seminary and Catholic Action chapter, and reforming his administration. He also led a diocesan synod in 1927 and 1938.

Pope John Paul II, on June 13, 1999 beatified Archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski and 107 other Poles who were martyred by the Nazi regime in World War II. The archbishop of Plock, Poland, Bishop Nowowiejski sought to better Catholic education in his diocese, creating a minor seminary and Catholic Action chapter, and reforming his administration. He also led a diocesan synod in 1927 and 1938. 

He was arrested by the Germans in 1940. He did not attempt to escape their power or flee to another country, refusing to abandon his flock. He refused also, at threat to his life, to profane the symbols of his faith. He was beaten to death in the Nazi Dzialdowo camp in 1941 at the age of 83.
