1 year after Hurricane Helene, communities plan events of reflection and renewal

One year after Hurricane Helene tore across the southeastern U.S., leaving behind devastation and heartbreak, communities in North Carolina and Florida are preparing to mark the somber anniversary with events centered on remembrance, gratitude, and healing.

The Avery Journal reported that Avery County, North Carolina, will observe the anniversary Sept. 27 with a series of community events beginning with a “Day of Remembrance & Honor” in Newland. The gathering will reflect on lives lost and recognize the efforts of first responders and volunteers.

The day will continue with the Helene Rising Festival at a local campground, where there will be music, food, and a community celebration. An afternoon event in Banner Elk will close the day with stories, songs, and shared memories of recovery.

In Asheville, Highland Brewing is partnering with city and county groups to host a four-day series of free events beginning Sept. 25. WCNC Charlotte reported that the programming includes live music, local food, and the release of a special-edition beer. Proceeds will support ongoing recovery.

The events aim to highlight the contributions of healthcare workers and emergency crews, while offering space for the community to gather and heal, according to the outlet.

In Florida, where Helene made landfall near the Big Bend region, Duke Energy, one of the state’s largest utility providers, is marking the anniversary with a focus on community support and preparedness. Florida Politics reported that the company will award $50,000 in grants to nonprofits in Pinellas County during a Sept. 24 event at its Mobile Command Center. Though the county was spared a direct hit, it faced serious flooding from storm surge.

In advance of the anniversary, Duke has also distributed emergency supply kits and offered educational resources to residents, helping them prepare more confidently for future storms.

In Hernando County, Florida, an anniversary event will take place Sept. 27 under the theme “Stronger Together – Healing and Resilience After Hurricane Helene,” Hernando Sun reported. Hosted by the county’s Long Term Recovery Group, the gathering will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Weeki Wachee Area Club in Spring Hill.

The event will include a remembrance ceremony, wellness activities like guided mindfulness and healing art, a local resource fair, and family programming — all designed to support recovery, connection, and preparedness for future storms.

In Tennessee, Washington County is also preparing to mark the anniversary with a community gathering titled “A Day When Reflection Gives Way to Hope,” the county announced Sept. 19.

Organized by the Washington County Long Term Recovery Group, the Sept. 27 evening event will include dinner, a memorial tribute, and access to recovery resources at the Farm at Jackson Bridge in Jonesborough. Local leaders and faith groups will lead the program, which aims to honor those lost in the storm and support those still rebuilding, while offering space for shared stories and reflection.
