Cardinal Burke to celebrate Traditional Latin Mass at St Peter's Basilica in October

Cardinal Raymond Burke is set to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Altar of the Throne at 3 p.m. Oct. 25 for the annual Ad Petri Sedem Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage, according to the event’s website.
Vatican journalist Diane Montagna confirmed the news in a Sept. 7 X post, explaining that it will be a Pontifical High Mass in the Old Rite.

The pilgrimage will take place from Oct. 24 to 26, ending on Christ the King Sunday, according to the pilgrimage website. Christian Marquant, coordinator of the pilgrimage organizer Coetus Internationalis Summorum Pontificum, said in a Sept. 8 interview published on the website that Cardinal Burke is sponsoring this pilgrimage.
Marquant said the pontifical Mass celebrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the altar of the Throne has occurred 11 times since 2012, and did not take place in 2023 or 2024.
The interviewer — whose name was not disclosed on the site — asked if it was “a miracle” that a Mass of the pilgrimage would once again take place in St. Peter’s.
Marquant responded: “The joy of peace while giving thanks for this return, thanks to Heaven and Pope Leo, to our holy spiritual and liturgical habits.”
According to a Sept. 8 press release from International Una Voce Federation (FIUV), which is a member of the Coetus Internationalis Summorum Pontificum, the pilgrimage was not given permission to have a Mass at the Basilica the past two years, after Traditionis Custodes was put into effect.
The release states that Cardinal Burke celebrated the TLM for the pilgrimage in 2014 as well.
“We are grateful to Pope Leo for his pastoral response to the request for a Traditional Mass in St Peter’s,” FIUV President Joseph Shaw said in the release. “This celebration symbolises the unity with the Holy Father so desired by Catholics attached to the ancient rite of Mass.”
In June, Cardinal Burke said he expressed hope to Pope Leo that he would allow more access to the Latin Mass.
