Catholic Judge Frank Caprio dies at 88

Retired municipal judge Frank Caprio, known as “the nicest judge in the world,” passed away from pancreatic cancer Aug. 20. He was 88 years old.

“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” reads a statement posted to his official social media accounts. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

Caprio, a devout Catholic, served as a judge for nearly 40 years in Providence, Rhode Island. He became famous across the world after videos from his courtroom show, Caught in Providence, went viral, with viewers attracted by his unique approach to justice and his love for the people in front of him. He once said, “I try to treat the people that come before me the way my parents taught me, with dignity and respect.”

According to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, Caprio was born in 1936 in Providence to Italian immigrants, the second of three sons. His parents showed him how to practice compassion and charity, lessons that formed him throughout his childhood and school years and influenced his judicial career.

Caprio obtained his law degree from Suffolk University in Boston. He became a judge in 1985 and retired in 2023, according to local CBS affiliate WRPI. He was a member of  the Providence City Council, was a delegate for several Democratic National Conventions, and served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard.  

He additionally was involved in community organizations and established scholarships at several educational institutions. He also chaired the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, according to WRPI.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2023 and underwent radiation treatment, WPRI added. In a video posted to his social media Aug. 19, he told his followers that he had experienced a setback and was in the hospital again, and he asked for their prayers.

“I’m a great believer in the power of prayers,” he added. “I think the Almighty above is looking over us. So remember me, please.”

The Aug. 20 statement announcing his death said that Caprio “will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.” 

“His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired,” the statement added. “In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”

Caprio’s son David Caprio confirmed his father’s death in another message posted to Caprio’s social media accounts. He said that Caprio died peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.

“On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, your thoughts, and your unwavering support for him throughout his journey,” David said. “Your love lifted him in ways that words cannot describe.”

Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, and their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
