Pittsburgh Catholic schools seek stronger security measures in wake of Minneapolis shooting

As families around the country grapple with the shock and grief of the Minneapolis school shooting, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh are taking immediate steps to increase protection for their students.

According to CBS News, Wendell Hissrich, head of diocesan security and safety, quickly sought heightened vigilance throughout his jurisdiction upon learning of the tragedy. He told the outlet that he reached out to each of the diocese’s two dozen public safety officers to request increased security. 

He also contacted public law enforcement, which has offered extra patrols around the schools, he told CBS News. 

Superintendent Lauren Martin told the outlet that certain safety measures are typically already observed, such as keeping schools’ outside doors locked and checking people entering the buildings. 

Leadership in Pittsburgh’s public school system is reminding parents of safety protocols as children return to classes. 

“Parents need to know that we are going to do our part to make them safe,” Superintendent Wayne Walters told WTAE 4, an ABC affiliate.

Most of the buildings have metal detectors that inspect students, families, and visitors, according to Walters. Additionally, guests entering the buildings must sign in with their ID. If the person does not have an ID, their photo will be taken and additional information will be asked of them. 

Walters added that district staff  ask parents to “honor what we're trying to do to make sure that everyone is safe.”
