St. Cyril of Alexandria devoted his life to helping others know and follow Jesus Christ. As a bishop and teacher, he guided the Church through one of the most important moments in its history, defending the faith during a time when many faithful were searching for answers.
Cyril became bishop of Alexandria in the early fifth century, later becoming one of the Church's greatest defenders of the faith, always striving to protect the truth that had been handed down by the apostles.
When a dispute arose over the identity of Jesus, Cyril opposed the teachings of Nestorius, who claimed that Christ's humanity and divinity were separate. Cyril defended the Church's belief that Jesus is one Person who is both fully God and fully man. He also upheld the title Mother of God for Mary because she gave birth to Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man.
In 431, Cyril represented the pope at the Council of Ephesus, where the Church reaffirmed these teachings. His leadership helped bring clarity to the Church, and his writings would later earn him the title Doctor of the Church.
St. Cyril's life reminds us that holiness is a lifelong journey. Like all of us, he continued to grow in faith while remaining devoted to Christ and His Church. His example encourages us to seek the truth with humility, remain steadfast in our faith, and trust that God continues to guide His people.
St. Cyril of Alexandria, pray for us!
