‘Charlie stood for life, for faith, and for biblical truth’: Alveda King responds to Kirk’s killing

In response to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, pro-life leader and civil rights advocate Alveda King offered a powerful and personal statement, drawing from her own family’s painful history with political violence.

“As a woman who survived the assassinations of my uncle, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., my father, Reverend A.D. King, and my grandmother, Mrs. Alberta Williams-King, I know all too well the impact of this kind of cowardly act. Charlie Kirk was assassinated,” King said in a video posted to X Sept. 17.

She addressed the backlash Kirk has received even in death, criticizing those who have labeled him a “racist, white supremacist, or even a fake Christian.”

“Such accusations,” she said, “are conversations unbecoming to a Christian.”

King described Kirk as a man unafraid to speak truth publicly.

“In the final analysis, Charlie stood for life, for faith, and for biblical truth,” she said. “He wasn't afraid to say the name of Jesus in the public square, and he paid a price for it.”

Reflecting on the larger meaning of his witness, King emphasized that this is a time not for criticism, but for courage and unity.

“Now is not the time to attack Charlie,” she said. “It's the time to lift up the banner of Christ. As a member of the one blood human race, Charlie Kirk did. His legacy of public discourse, of bringing difficult conversations to the table mattered. He caused us to think and to pray.”

King closed her remarks with a call to remember what matters most.

“Charlie has gone to meet his maker. May he rest in peace,” she said. “May we honor him today by praying for his family and by answering this question: Where will you spend eternity?”
