In final days, Charlie Kirk reportedly told bishop: ‘I’m this close’ to entering the Catholic Church

Just days before his tragic death, Charlie Kirk revealed to a California bishop that he was seriously contemplating entering the Catholic Church, according to a Sept. 18 article by Robert Brennan for Angelus News.
The conversation happened at a pro-life prayer breakfast in Visalia, California, where Kirk spoke briefly with Bishop Joseph Brennan of Fresno. In a Sept. 18 article for Angelus News, Robert Brennan — who is the bishop’s brother — shared what Kirk said during that moment.
Speaking to Bishop Brennan, Kirk spoke about his Catholic wife and children, said he regularly goes to Mass with them, and added, “I love my Catholic pastor.”
Then, as the two men parted, Kirk acknowledged speculation about his possible conversion and said simply, “I’m this close.”
In his reflection for Angelus News, Brennan brought attention to this moment as one of two strong indications that Kirk may have been on the verge of embracing Catholicism.
The other, he noted, was a recent video Kirk had posted, encouraging fellow Protestants to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Brennan described the video as one that “could have been shown in a Catholic school religion class,” pointing out that Kirk presented Mary as a model of Christian discipleship with relevance far beyond Catholic circles.

"Mary is a phenomenal example, and I think a counter, to so much of the toxicity of feminism in the modern era."

For Brennan, the story held a personal resonance. He recalled how his father, during his battle with terminal illness, had been deeply moved upon learning that actor John Wayne had entered the Catholic Church before his death.
It’s this same kind of quiet hope that Brennan sees in Kirk’s final days. He reflected on how a man could be “loved into the Church by a faithful wife,” and noted “how fitting” it was that one of Kirk’s final public messages centered on the Blessed Mother.
“In his own way he was reaching out to her,” Brennan wrote. “And now, I am convinced, she is returning the favor.”
