Los Angeles youth celebrate the canonization of 2 new saints

The canonizations of Saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati drew celebrations in Los Angeles this past weekend, as Catholic youth joined the global Church in welcoming two new saints.

Pope Leo XIV presided at the Mass of canonization Sept. 7 in St. Peter’s Square, an event that honored the witness of two young Catholics known for their joyful faith and devotion.

According to a press release from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, local commemorations began the evening before at St. Agnes Catholic Church, where young people from across Los Angeles gathered for several hours of fellowship. The gathering featured music, food, games, and Eucharistic Adoration. A relic of St. Carlo Acutis was also made available for veneration.

On Sunday morning, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels hosted another moment of celebration. After the morning Mass, Archbishop José H. Gomez blessed a newly established “Chapel of Young Witnesses” and installed a relic of St. Carlo Acutis there for permanent veneration.

For the local Church, the canonization of St. Pier Giorgio carried a special connection. His cause was advanced by the healing of Los Angeles priest Father Juan Manuel Gutierrez, who recovered from a torn Achilles tendon in what the Vatican later recognized as a miracle.
